Violin Concerto with Timbilas – PORTO
film by George van Dam and Drumming Grupo de percussão
musical direction by Miquel Bernat

Violin Concerto with Timbila Orchestra (Concierto para Violin y Timbilas)
version 2012
commissioned by Miquel Bernat for Drumming Grupo Percussão Porto in 2008 and subsequently performed in festivals in Spain and Portugal.
instrumentation: violin solo with amplification + fx 7 timbilas (4 soprano, 2 bariton, 1 Xikulo)

In 2012 a definitive version was prepared for the filming and recording of the work in June 2012 at Auditorium dʼEspinho in Portugal. The editing and sound mixing is currently in production for projection on three separable screens and 5.1 surround sound.

The work is specially conceived for amplified solo violin accompanied by an ensemble of timbilas. It is perhaps one of the very first occasions in which these traditionally African instruments are used in a western-style contemporary music format. The timbilas are part of the collection of Drumming GP and were constructed by the master musician and -builder Venancio Mbande in Moçambique.

Violin Concerto with Timbila Orchestra is in four movements with a duration of 23 minutes.
Although the title of the work refers to the violin as a solo instrument in an instrumental concerto context, the accompanying parts are of such a high level of virtuosity that the work really is a concertante piece for 8 players.
